Sunderland – Fawcett Street

Could this ornate building have inspired the Burton elephant heads? Built 1873-77 as the Elephant Tea Warehouse for Grimshaw & Son, it boasts beautiful sculpted stone elephants and was later occupied by Burton by 1931.

Burton later acquired Jacksons the Tailors and moved further along the High Street. In 2023 the midcentury Burton shopfront with its distinctive corner columns was removed and replaced with a brick facade on the ground floor, more in keeping with the rest of the building.
