Welcome to the New Laid by Monty: Buildings With Stories!

Laid by Monty launched on X – then Twitter – a decade ago, in 2016, and the web site followed in 2023. However, you may have heard the crickets chirping around here over the last couple of years as updates have been few and far between. There are fewer Deco Burton branches left to discover – although every now and then I’m surprised by one – and there’s less interaction due to a drop in follower numbers.

This led to me asking on a particularly depressing mid-January day if anyone wanted to take over the site and account from me.

Teresa responded. She is passionate about Burton buildings and also the history of the company in general. Her enthusiasm is infectious and has reignited my interest in this project. And so Laid by Monty has been re-born.

New blog

The web site has been re-launched as a blog. You’ll see the latest posts on the home page. We will both be conducting research and visiting archives to bring you interesting articles and stories about all things Burton. You can of course still access the Burtons location database and map from the menu at the top.

I’ll also be posting more general articles about architecture and places because sometimes I’m taken up with other subjects and just need to share my excitement about Googie diners in Los Angeles, or pie and mash shops in London! And there are hundreds of you following me who are interested in architecture, retail and history, so I hope you’ll appreciate these other musings too.

New logo

Laid by Monty has a fresh new logotype for a fresh start. I wanted something that looked bolder and more modern. However, it retains cues from the previous logo with its large tail “swoosh”, which is of course in turn taken from the vintage Burton script logo.

New socials

I understand that not everyone is comfortable using the same social media platforms, so you can now follow us on Facebook and Instagram as well. Just use the buttons below. All new articles will be announced on each platform, but you may find some additional surprises unique to certain channels.

If you find this web site interesting and the database useful, please consider making a donation, as web hosting and databases don’t come for free. You can make a donation of any amount via the Buy Me a Coffee button below.

We hope you’ll enjoy the content that’s coming!
